Our Story
_jfif.jpg)
Established in 2011, The Somerville Mobile Farmers Market supports local residents
and Massachusetts Farmers by offering a wide variety of farm fresh produce at low prices
by traveling to neighborhoods around Somerville during the months of July through October.
The Market is operated by the City of Somerville’s Office of Food Access and Healthy Communities with the help of many partners and community members.
Now having completed its 15th season, SMFM was initially launched in response to the closing of a walkable grocery store in Winter Hill. Residents and community partners identified a mobile farmers market as a way to improve good food access in the area.
It took a coalition of partners to make the Mobile Farmers Market happen and included
The Welcome Project, Mystic Housing, Groundwork Somerville, Enterprise Farm and community members and the City of Somerville. In 2011, The SMFM operated as a one-site pilot in Winter Hill’s Mystic Housing Development.
Over the years, the market has grown to selling farm fresh MA produce from six farms, at four Somerville locations per week, upgrading to a grant funded, city-owned, cargo van, an outdoor walk-in fridge and a city-supported financial model to aggregate locally grown food and sell
at roughly wholesale prices.
The market sells common and culturally relevant produce sourced from Massachusetts farms
at affordable prices for everyone who shops.
We aim to serve a diverse range of ages and backgrounds and all are welcome!
